Questions & Answers about Sanayi şirketleri büyüdüğünden beri karbon salınımı durmuyor.
How exactly does büyüdüğünden beri mean "since they grew"?
This uses the temporal clause structure you are currently learning. We take the verb root büyü- (to grow), add the participle suffix -dük (which softens to -düğ), and then the 3rd-person possessive -ü to represent "its/their growing". Finally, we add the ablative case -nden (from) and the postposition beri (since). Literally, it translates to "Since from the time of their growing."
Since the subject is plural (şirketleri, companies), shouldn't it be büyüdüklerinden beri?
You can actually use both, but büyüdüğünden beri is very common and completely correct. In Turkish, when a plural subject is non-human (like companies, objects, or animals), grammatical agreement often defaults to the singular 3rd-person form. Therefore, using the singular possessive -ü instead of the plural -leri on the verb is perfectly natural here.
Why do sanayi şirketleri and karbon salınımı end in -i and -ı?
These are both indefinite noun compounds, which you use when pairing two nouns to create a new specific concept (like "industry companies" or "carbon emission"). In this structure, the first noun stays bare, but the second noun must take a possessive suffix. That's why şirketler becomes şirketleri and salınım becomes salınımı.
Why use the present continuous tense (durmuyor) when talking about something that has been happening since the past?
