Questions & Answers about Sürünün büyümesi için biyolog geyiği yaban hayatına salmak istedi.
How does Sürünün büyümesi için mean "for the herd to grow"?
This is the structure for a purpose clause when the subject of the action is different from the main sentence. The main subject is the biologist, but the one doing the growing is the herd. To say "for the herd to grow," Turkish uses the genitive case for the herd (sürünün) and the verbal noun with a possessive ending for the action (büyümesi, meaning "its growing"). Together with için, it literally translates to "for the herd's growing."
Why is salmak in its full infinitive form, while büyümek is changed to büyümesi?
We use the infinitive salmak (to release) because the person doing the releasing is the same as the person who wanted to do it—the biologist. However, the biologist isn't the one growing; the herd is. When the subject of the purpose clause ("the herd") is different from the main subject ("the biologist"), we can't use the infinitive. Instead, we must use the verbal noun (büyüme) plus a possessive ending (-si).
Why is geyik (deer) spelled geyiği here?
Two things happen here. First, the deer is the specific direct object of the verb salmak (to release), so it needs the accusative case ending -i. Second, when a suffix starting with a vowel is added to a word ending in k, the k softens to a ğ. So, geyik + -i becomes geyiği ("the specific deer").
