Learn Turkish: Çipin çalışması için bu zararsız halka gerekli mi? - Is this harmless ring necessary for the chip to work?

In Turkish, when you want to say "for [something] to do [something]", you treat it like a possession. We are literally saying "for the chip's working". First, add the genitive case -in to the subject (çip becomes çipin). Then, take the verbal noun (çalışma) and add the 3rd person possessive suffix (-sı). Finally, add için (for).

Does halka mean a "ring" like the jewelry you wear on your finger?

No, a ring you wear on your finger is a yüzük. Halka refers to a ring shape, a hoop, or a circular link (like an onion ring or a metal loop). In this sentence, it refers to a circular physical component.

Could I say ...halka gerekiyor mu? instead of ...halka gerekli mi?

Yes, you could! Gerekli is an adjective meaning "necessary", so you use the basic "to be" question particle mi (Is it necessary?). Gerekiyor is a verb meaning "is needed", which takes the particle mu (gerekiyor mu? = is it needed?). Both are very common and mean practically the same thing here.

What is the suffix -sız doing in the word zararsız?
