Questions & Answers about Bu yeni teknolojiye kapılmamak imkânsızdır.
Why does teknoloji take the dative case (teknolojiye) here?
The verb kapılmak (to get caught up / to be swept away) requires the dative case (-e/-a) for the thing you are caught up in. Even though English uses "in," Turkish uses the dative to show you are drawn to or towards it.
How is the word kapılmamak built?
The root is kapmak (to grab or snatch). Adding the passive suffix -ıl creates kapılmak (to be grabbed / to get caught up). Then, we add the negative marker -ma and the infinitive ending -mak, giving us kapılmamak (not to get caught up).
What does the -dır suffix add to imkânsızdır?
It acts as a certainty or fact marker. While imkânsız simply means "impossible," adding -dır makes the sentence sound like a universal truth or an objective, formal statement. It emphasizes that getting caught up in the technology is an absolute certainty.
Why use the simple infinitive kapılmamak instead of a personalized verbal noun?
When a statement applies generally to anyone, Turkish uses the standard infinitive (-mak or -mek). If the sentence were about a specific person, like "It is impossible for me not to get caught up," you would use a verbal noun with a possessive ending instead, such as kapılmamam.
