Questions & Answers about Otelde konaklayıp konaklamadığını ve servis isteyip istemediğini soruyorlar.
How does konaklayıp konaklamadığını translate to "whether or not he is staying"?
This is the standard way to form an indirect yes/no question in Turkish. You take the positive verb root (konakla-), add -(y)ıp, and then repeat the verb in the negative using the -dık object participle structure: konakla-ma-dığ-ı-n-ı. It essentially bundles "his staying and his not staying" into a single concept.
Why do both konaklamadığını and istemediğini end with the accusative case suffix (-ı and -i)?
Because both of these "whether or not" clauses act as the specific direct objects of the main verb soruyorlar (they are asking). What are they asking? They are asking about the staying and about the wanting. When a clause acts as the specific thing being asked about, it takes the accusative case.
Could konaklamadığını also mean "whether you are staying"?
Yes, absolutely! The word is ambiguous without context because the suffixes look identical. It could be built as -ı-n-ı (his/her + buffer + accusative) or -ın-ı (your + accusative). We only know it means "he" here because of the provided English translation. In a real conversation, context or a pronoun like onun or senin would clear this up.
Why use the verb konaklamak here instead of the more common kalmak for "to stay"?
