Questions & Answers about Evdeki musluğu ve boruyu kime tamir ettirdin?
How is the causative formed in tamir ettirdin?
The base verb is tamir etmek (to repair), which uses the helper verb etmek. We take the root et- and add the causative suffix. Because et- ends in a voiceless consonant (t), the suffix -dir changes to -tir for consonant harmony, making ettir- (to have someone do/repair). Finally, we add the past tense -di and the "you" personal ending -n.
Why do we use the dative word kime (to whom) instead of the accusative kimi?
This is a key rule for Turkish causatives. If the original verb takes a direct object (like "repairing the pipe"), the person who is asked or forced to do the action must take the dative case (-e or -a). So, you are literally asking "To whom did you have repair the pipe?" That is why we use kime.
Why does the dictionary word musluk (faucet) change to musluğu here?
Because the faucet is the specific direct object being repaired, it needs the accusative case suffix (-u). When a suffix starting with a vowel is added to a word ending in k, the hard k softens into a ğ (consonant mutation). So musluk plus -u becomes musluğu.
