Learn Turkish: İtfaiyeci hortum ile dumanın içine girebildi. - The firefighter was able to enter the smoke with the hose.

The verb root gir- (to enter) takes the ability suffix -ebil. Then we add the definite past tense suffix -di. Put together, girebildi means "he was able to enter" or "he managed to enter."

Why is it dumanın içine rather than just dumana?

Saying dumana just means "to the smoke." To specifically say "into" (to the inside of), Turkish uses a possessive structure. Dumanın (of the smoke) links with içi (its inside). Finally, we add the buffer -n- and the directional suffix -e (to/towards) to show movement, creating dumanın içine (into the smoke).

Could hortum ile (with the hose) be written as a single word?

Yes! The word ile (with) can stand alone, or it can be attached to the noun as a suffix. Following vowel harmony rules for hortum, the suffix form is -la. So, you could also write it as hortumla, and the meaning stays exactly the same.

How is the word itfaiyeci formed?

The root word is itfaiye, which means "fire department" or "fire brigade." Adding the profession suffix -ci turns it into a person who does that job. So, an itfaiyeci is a firefighter.
