Questions & Answers about Müdür, röportajda gerçeği anlatmamış.
Why does the verb end with -mamış instead of the regular past tense -madı?
The suffix -mış is the reported past tense. By using the negative reported past -mamış instead of the direct past -madı, the speaker shows they didn't witness the interview themselves. They learned about it later from someone else or inferred it. That is why the English translation includes the word apparently.
Why is the word for truth written as gerçeği? Where did the ğ come from?
The base word for truth is gerçek. Because it is the specific thing being told (the direct object of the verb), it needs the accusative case suffix -i. When you add a vowel suffix to a Turkish word ending in k, that k usually softens into a ğ (soft g). So, gerçek plus -i becomes gerçeği.
Could we use söylememiş instead of anlatmamış to mean he didn't tell the truth?
Yes, you could say gerçeği söylememiş, which strictly means he did not say the truth. However, anlatmak means to explain, narrate, or tell a story. Because an interview involves giving detailed answers, anlatmamış is a very natural choice here to imply he did not give a truthful explanation.
