Questions & Answers about Çok kararlıyız, bu projeyi ertelemeyeceğiz.
How do we break down a long word like ertelemeyeceğiz?
It is built piece by piece! The root is ertele- (to postpone). Then we add the negative suffix -me. Because the future suffix -ecek starts with a vowel, we need the buffer letter -y- between them. Finally, we add the personal ending -iz (we). When -iz is added, the k in -ecek softens to ğ. So it is: ertele + me + y + ece(ğ) + iz.
Does the negative suffix -me change its vowel here like it does in the present continuous tense?
No, and that is an important rule to remember! In the present continuous tense, the -yor suffix causes vowel narrowing (for example changing e to i). However, before the future tense suffix -ecek, the negative suffixes -me and -ma do not change their vowels. They stay exactly as they are.
Why does proje have the ending -yi to become projeyi?
Proje is the direct object of the verb because it is what we are postponing. Since we are talking about a specific project (bu proje or this project), it needs the accusative case to show it is a specific direct object. Since proje ends in a vowel, we add the buffer -y- followed by the accusative suffix -i.
