Questions & Answers about Adam üç saattir soğuğa dayanıyor.
How does the -tir suffix work in üç saattir?
The suffix -DIr means for a period of time. Since saat ends in a hard consonant (t), the suffix changes to start with a t. Also, saat is an exception word; it takes a front vowel suffix even though its last vowel is an a. That is why it becomes -tir instead of -tır.
The translation says has been enduring, but dayanıyor is just present continuous. Why?
In Turkish, when an action started in the past and is still ongoing, you use the present continuous tense (-ıyor). When paired with a time duration like üç saattir, it translates directly to the English has been doing structure.
Why is an -a added to the word for cold (soğuk) to make it soğuğa?
The verb dayanmak (to endure or withstand) always takes the dative case (the direction toward something). In Turkish, you literally say that the man is enduring to the cold. That is why we add the -a suffix.
Why did the k in soğuk change into a ğ?
