Questions & Answers about Şimdi işime odaklanıyorum.
Why is it işime and not işimde if the English translation says "on my work"?
In English, we focus on something, but in Turkish, the verb odaklanmak (to focus) always takes the dative case (-e or -a). This case usually translates to "to" or "towards." In Turkish, you are literally directing your focus towards your work!
What do the different suffixes in işime mean?
The base word is iş (work). First we add the possessive suffix -im to mean "my" (işim = my work). Then we add the dative suffix -e required by the verb. So it breaks down as: iş + im + e = işime.
How do we get from the dictionary form odaklanmak to odaklanıyorum?
We drop the -mak to get the stem odaklan. Since it ends in a consonant, we need a 4-way vowel harmony buffer (-ı-) before adding the present continuous suffix -yor. Finally, we add the "I" personal suffix -um to match the "o" in -yor.
Is the verb odaklanmak related to the word oda (room)?
