Questions & Answers about Kedi küçük mü?
Why is the question particle mü here instead of mi?
The question particle follows 4-way vowel harmony. It looks at the last vowel of the word right before it. The last vowel in küçük is ü. According to the rules, if the last vowel is ö or ü, the particle must be mü.
Since mü changes its vowel to match küçük, why isn't it attached to the word?
That is a special rule for the yes/no question particle! Even though it changes its vowel to match the previous word (just like a suffix does), it is always written as a separate word with a space before it.
Where is the word for 'is' in this sentence?
In Turkish, there is no direct equivalent for the verb 'to be' (am/is/are) when describing things in the present tense. 'The cat is small' is simply Kedi küçük. To ask 'Is the cat small?', you just add the question particle at the end.
How do we know this means 'the cat' and not just 'a cat'?
Turkish doesn't have a direct word for 'the'. When a noun is the subject of a sentence, like kedi is here, it is naturally understood as specific ('the cat'). If you wanted to ask about 'a cat', you would add the word bir (one/a) to make it Bir kedi küçük mü?.
