Questions & Answers about Kazanmak için hızlı koşuyorum.
Why does the sentence use kazanmak için instead of just kazanmak to mean 'to win'?
In English, we usually say 'to win' or 'in order to win'. In Turkish, to express purpose, you use the dictionary form of the verb (ending in -mak or -mek) followed by için (for). So kazanmak için literally means 'for winning', which gives us 'in order to win'.
Hızlı usually means the adjective 'fast'. Do we need a special ending to use it as an adverb like 'quickly'?
No special ending is needed! In Turkish, most adjectives can be used directly as adverbs to describe how an action is done. You simply place the word right before the verb. That is why hızlı koşuyorum means 'I am running fast' or 'I am running quickly'.
How is the verb koşuyorum built?
It starts with the root koş- (run). Then we add the present continuous tense ending -uyor (meaning an ongoing action, like '-ing'). Finally, the personal suffix -um shows that 'I' am the one doing it. Together: koş-uyor-um (I am running).
Why is kazanmak için at the beginning of the sentence?
In standard Turkish, the main verb (koşuyorum) goes at the very end. The phrase explaining 'why' you are doing the action (kazanmak için) typically comes earlier in the sentence, while the word explaining 'how' you do it (hızlı) stays closely attached right next to the verb.
