Questions & Answers about Oteller haziran ve temmuz aylarında çok pahalı.
Why are haziran and temmuz written with lowercase letters?
In Turkish, months and days of the week are only capitalized if they are part of an exact specific date (like 15 Temmuz). When talking about the months in general, as we are doing here with June and July, they are written with lowercase letters.
Could I just say haziran ve temmuzda instead of using aylarında?
Yes, you can! Saying haziran ve temmuzda (in June and July) is perfectly correct. However, Turkish speakers often use the word ay (month) when grouping them. The phrase haziran ve temmuz aylarında translates more literally to 'in the months of June and July'.
How exactly is the word aylarında built?
It is a combination of several basic building blocks you have learned. It starts with ay (month) plus the plural lar (months). Next is the possessive suffix ı which links it to June and July, followed by the buffer letter n, and finally the locative suffix da which gives us the meaning 'in'.
Where is the word for 'are' in this sentence?
In Turkish, the present tense 'to be' (like am, is, are) is usually attached as a suffix rather than a separate word. For third-person subjects like oteller (hotels), it is completely normal to leave this suffix off entirely. The phrase çok pahalı does all the work to mean 'are very expensive'.
