Questions & Answers about Onlar nerede bekliyorlar?
Why do we add -lar to the end of bekliyorlar if Onlar already means "they"?
In Turkish, verbs take personal suffixes to match the subject. For "they" (third-person plural), the suffix is -lar or -ler. While you can sometimes drop the -lar on the verb if Onlar is already in the sentence, keeping it is very common and perfectly correct.
The root for "to wait" is bekle-. Why does it become bekliyor instead of "bekleyor"?
This happens because of a rule called vowel narrowing. When a verb root ends in a or e (like bekle-), that final vowel drops or changes to a narrower one (ı, i, u, or ü) when the present continuous -yor suffix is added. Here, the e turns into an i, giving us bekliyor.
Why is the question word nerede instead of just nere?
Nerede literally means "at where" or "in where." It includes the locative suffix -de (in/on/at). Because the people are waiting at a specific location, Turkish requires this location suffix on the question word.
Why does the question word nerede come in the middle of the sentence?
Turkish sentences typically put the verb at the very end. Question words usually go right before the verb they are asking about. So the subject Onlar comes first, followed by nerede, and finally the verb bekliyorlar.
