To talk about yourself and others, attach a personal subject suffix to the present continuous tense marker (-Iyor). Because -Iyor always ends in o, the vowels in these personal suffixes never change! They always follow vowel harmony for the letter o.
| Pronoun | Present Continuous Ending | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Ben | -Iyorum | I am ... |
| Sen | -Iyorsun | You are ... |
| O | -Iyor | He/She/It is ... |
| Biz | -Iyoruz | We are ... |
| Siz | -Iyorsunuz | You are ... (plural/formal) |
| Onlar | -Iyorlar | They are ... |
I and You
Add -um (-Iyorum) for "I" and -sun (-Iyorsun) for "you".
| I like coffee. | Ben kahve seviyorum. |
| I am working today. | Ben bugün çalışıyorum. |
| You run every day. | Sen her gün koşuyorsun. |
| You are reading a book. | Sen kitap okuyorsun. |
He, She, and It
The third-person singular takes no personal suffix. It is just the root plus the tense marker.
| He lives here. | O burada yaşıyor. |
We and You (Plural/Formal)
Add -uz (-Iyoruz) for "we" and -sunuz (-Iyorsunuz) for "you" (plural or formal).
| We are walking together. | Biz beraber yürüyoruz. |
| You are listening to music. | Siz müzik dinliyorsunuz. |
They
Add the plural suffix -lar to get -Iyorlar.
| They are watching television. | Onlar televizyon izliyorlar. |
Putting It All Together
Because the verb suffix clearly tells you who is acting, you do not always need to include the subject pronoun. Using it is simply a great way to add emphasis or contrast different subjects.
| You are asking a question, I am giving an answer. | Sen bir soru soruyorsun, ben cevap veriyorum. |
| You are giving apples, we like apples. | Siz elma veriyorsunuz, biz elma seviyoruz. |
