Questions & Answers about Lütfen düz yürüyün.
Why does the verb yürüyün have a -y- before the suffix?
The verb root is yürü- (to walk), which ends in a vowel. The formal/plural imperative suffix is -ün (following 4-way vowel harmony). Because Turkish doesn't usually allow two vowels right next to each other, we add the buffer consonant -y- between them, making it yürü-y-ün.
Does yürüyün mean I am talking to multiple people?
It could be, but not necessarily. The -In suffix is used for both the plural 'you' (talking to a group) and the formal 'you' (talking politely to one person). Combined with lütfen (please), this is a standard polite request whether addressed to one person or many.
Could I use the -InIz suffix from the lesson and say yürüyünüz?
Yes, you can. Yürüyünüz is an even more formal version of the command. You will often see the -InIz endings on written public signs or hear them in official announcements. In everyday polite conversation, yürüyün is perfectly fine.
