Questions & Answers about Bu kitapta yüz sayfa var.
Why is it sayfa instead of the plural sayfalar if there are a hundred of them?
In Turkish, nouns that come after a number or a quantity word always stay singular. Even though there are one hundred of them, you say yüz sayfa (literally 'one hundred page'), never yüz sayfalar.
If this lesson is about kaç (how many), how would I use it to ask how many pages are in this book?
To ask 'How many pages are in this book?', you simply replace the number yüz with the question word kaç. The sentence becomes Bu kitapta kaç sayfa var? Notice that just like with numbers, the noun sayfa stays singular after kaç.
Why is the suffix -ta used in kitapta instead of -da?
The suffix for 'in', 'on', or 'at' is usually -da or -de. However, the word kitap ends in a hard consonant (p). To make it easier to pronounce, Turkish consonant harmony rules change the 'd' to a 't', making it kitapta (in the book).
Why isn't there a word for 'one' before yüz?
In English we say 'one hundred', but in Turkish you just say yüz. You do not use the word bir (one) in front of yüz (hundred) or bin (thousand) to mean exactly one hundred or one thousand.
