Questions & Answers about Televizyon ve bilgisayar yok.
Why is yok only used once if the English translation says "no television and no computer"?
In English, we often repeat the word "no". In Turkish, yok applies to the entire subject that comes before it. Because Televizyon ve bilgisayar are connected by ve (and), the single yok at the end makes them both non-existent.
Does yok change if we are talking about more than one thing being absent?
No. Unlike some words in other languages, yok never changes form to match how many things are missing. Whether it is one thing or a hundred things, you always just use yok.
Why is yok placed at the very end of the sentence?
Turkish sentences usually put the main action or state at the very end. Even though yok is not a traditional verb, it acts as the main verb of this sentence by telling us the state of the TV and computer.
Is the word bilgisayar made of two different words?
Yes! It is a compound word made of bilgi (information or knowledge) and sayar (counter, from the verb to count). So a computer in Turkish is literally an "information counter."
