Questions & Answers about Şimdi aç mısın?
Why is mısın used instead of just mı?
The mı part is the yes/no question word, and -sın is the personal suffix meaning 'you'. In Turkish, when asking 'are you?', 'are we?', etc., the personal 'to be' suffix attaches directly to the question word instead of the adjective, creating mısın.
Why is it mısın and not misin?
This happens because of 4-way vowel harmony. The question particle looks at the last vowel of the word right before it. Because aç contains the vowel 'a', the particle uses 'ı', making it mı. The personal suffix follows along, becoming -sın.
Why is there a space between aç and mısın?
The Turkish question particle (mı / mi / mu / mü) is always written as a separate word from the word it is asking about. Even though the personal suffix (-sın) glues tightly onto the question particle, the particle itself stays detached from aç.
Where is the word for 'you' in this sentence?
The 'you' is built right into the suffix -sın. You could say Sen şimdi aç mısın? if you wanted to emphasize 'you', but because the ending makes it completely clear who is being asked, Turkish speakers usually drop the pronoun sen.
