Questions & Answers about Biz genciz.
Why does genç change to genciz? What happened to the ç?
In Turkish, when a word ends in a hard consonant like ç, p, t, or k, and you add a suffix starting with a vowel like -iz, the hard consonant often softens. Here, the ç in genç changes to a c to make it easier to pronounce. This is called consonant mutation.
How do we know to use -iz instead of -uz or -ız for 'we are'?
This is due to 4-way vowel harmony. You look at the last vowel in the root word, which is e in genç. According to the rules, words whose last vowel is e or i take a suffix with an i. Therefore, the suffix becomes -iz.
Do I always have to use the pronoun biz in sentences like this?
No, you could just say Genciz and it would still mean 'We are young.' The suffix -iz at the end already means 'we are'. Using the word biz at the beginning just adds a little extra emphasis.
Wait, is there no separate word for 'are' in Turkish?
