Questions & Answers about Bu arabalar yeni.
Why is it Bu instead of Bunlar if the translation says 'These'?
In Turkish, when a pointing word like bu comes right before a noun to describe it, it doesn't take a plural suffix. You just use the singular bu and make the noun plural: bu arabalar. You only use bunlar when it stands alone as a pronoun, like in Bunlar araba (These are cars).
Why does araba take -lar and not -ler for the plural?
Turkish uses 2-way vowel harmony for plurals. You look at the last vowel of the word. Since the last vowel in araba is a (a back vowel), it takes the matching suffix -lar. If the last vowel had been a front vowel like e or i, it would take -ler.
Where is the word for 'are' in this sentence?
There isn't one! In simple sentences like this, Turkish usually leaves out the 'to be' verb (am, is, are) for the third person. Just placing the subject bu arabalar next to the adjective yeni is enough to mean 'These cars are new.'
Should yeni also be plural since it describes plural cars?
No, adjectives in Turkish do not change to match the plural noun they describe. They always stay in their basic form. That is why it is just yeni and not yeniler.
