Contrary to Expectations: Using Aksine and Tersine
To express "unlike" or "contrary to," Turkish uses the words aksine or tersine. Both function similarly to highlight a contrast between expectation and reality.
The noun or pronoun you compare against takes the Genitive case suffix -(n)In.
- beklentiler (expectations) + -in -> beklentilerin aksine (contrary to expectations)
- eski sürüm (the old version) + -ün -> eski sürümün aksine (unlike the old version)
- rapor (the report) + -un -> raporun tersine (contrary to the report)
| Contrary to expectations, the first sample was very successful. | Beklentilerin aksine, ilk numune çok başarılıydı. |
| Unlike the old version, this device is quite fast. | Eski sürümün aksine, bu cihaz oldukça hızlı. |

Using Pronouns
This rule applies to pronouns as well. Personal and indefinite pronouns must take the Genitive case (benim, senin, onların, diğerlerinin).

Comparing Claims and Reality
These words are especially useful for contrasting promotional claims or standard procedures with actual, observed results.
