Sometimes you need to defend yourself against a false accusation, a misunderstanding, or outright paranoia. To express that frustrated "But...!" or "...anyway!", Turkish places the discourse particle **ki** at the very end of the phrase.

### Defending Yourself with Exasperation

When someone makes an unfair claim, you can add **ki** to the end of your denial to show counter-expectation or exasperation. It translates roughly to an emphatic "But..." at the start of an English sentence. Note that this particle is always written as a separate word.

### Challenging Flawed Assumptions

You can also use a trailing **ki** at the end of a question or a statement to point out that the other person's premise is flawed or pointless. In these cases, it functions much like adding "anyway" to your sentence.

### Hypotheticals: "Tut ki"

To entertain a paranoid thought or wild accusation just for the sake of argument, Turkish uses the phrase **Tut ki** ("Suppose that"). You will often see this paired with a trailing **ki** at the end of the sentence to argue that even if the hypothetical were true, the situation is still absurd.
