Things You Don't Remember
You already use -mış for stories and news you did not see yourself. You can use it about yourself too, for things you only know because other people told you, like what you did as a small child. Add the same personal endings as -iyor and the aorist:
| Person | Ending | yapmak | gelmek | okumak | düşmek |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben (I) | -ım / -im / -um / -üm | yapmışım | gelmişim | okumuşum | düşmüşüm |
| sen (you) | -sın / -sin / -sun / -sün | yapmışsın | gelmişsin | okumuşsun | düşmüşsün |
| o (he / she / it) | none | yapmış | gelmiş | okumuş | düşmüş |
| biz (we) | -ız / -iz / -uz / -üz | yapmışız | gelmişiz | okumuşuz | düşmüşüz |
| siz (you, plural or formal) | -sınız / -siniz / -sunuz / -sünüz | yapmışsınız | gelmişsiniz | okumuşsunuz | düşmüşsünüz |
| onlar (they) | -lar / -ler | yapmışlar | gelmişler | okumuşlar | düşmüşler |
- The vowel of the ending matches the vowel of -mış, -miş, -muş or -müş.
- -mışsın and -mışsınız are written with şs: the ş of -mış meets the s of the ending.
Compare the direct past: düştüm means I fell (and I remember it), düşmüşüm means apparently I fell.
Stories From When I Was Small
Nobody remembers their first years, so stories about them use -mışım:
| Apparently I crawled very early. | Ben çok erken emeklemişim. |
| Apparently I learned the alphabet at the age of three. | Ben alfabeyi üç yaşında öğrenmişim. |
| Apparently I broke my father's old spinning top. | Ben babamın eski topacını kırmışım. |
What the Teacher Said
When someone else tells you what you did, use -mışsın or -mışsınız. Göre (according to) often names the person who told you:
| According to your teacher, you drew a nice picture at kindergarten today. | Öğretmenine göre sen bugün anaokulunda güzel bir resim çizmişsin. |
| According to your nanny, you ate all the vegetables today. | Dadına göre sen bugün bütün sebzeleri yemişsin. |
| Apparently you played with a spinning top at recess. | Siz teneffüste topaçla oynamışsınız. |
We and They
Biz takes -mışız, and onlar takes -mışlar:
| Apparently my older brother and I played on the seesaw all day. | Biz ağabeyimle bütün gün tahterevallide oynamışız. |
| Apparently the children ran to the garden at recess. | Çocuklar teneffüste bahçeye koşmuşlar. |
