Not because (-dığından değil)

To clarify your true motivations for buying or avoiding something, Turkish uses the negative causal disclaimer: -dığından değil ("not because").

Building the Reason

To create this structure, turn the reason into a "because of" phrase, and negate it with değil:

Verb + -dık / -dik (participle) + possessive + -dan / -den (ablative meaning "because of") + değil.

When describing the state of an item—like being defective or expensive—use the helper verb olmak (to be) with the third-person possessive:

  • ol
    • duğu (participle + 3rd person) + n (buffer) + dan = olduğundan (because it is/was)
  • olduğundan değil = not because it is/was

You will frequently pair this with your actual reason, which uses the exact same grammatical structure but leaves out değil.

I returned the shoes not because they were defective, but because they were impractical.
Ayakkabıları defolu olduğundan değil, kullanışsız olduğundan geri verdim.
We didn't buy the imported product not because it was expensive, but because the domestic product was of higher quality.
İthal ürünü pahalı olduğundan değil, yerli ürün daha kaliteli olduğundan almadık.

Personal Motivations

If the reason is about your actions or feelings, the possessive ending changes to match the person. For example, to say "because I love," the root sev- takes the first-person possessive to become sevdiğimden. Add değil, and you have "not because I love."

I had kept the impractical phone on the table; not because I like waste, but because it held memories.
Masadaki kullanışsız telefonu saklamıştım; israfı sevdiğimden değil, hatırası olduğundan.

Negative Reasons

To state that a choice was not because you didn't do or have something, add the negative suffix -ma / -me directly to the verb root.

For example, in Turkish, "not having money" is expressed as your money "not existing" (olmamak). Thus, param olmadığından değil means "not because I didn't have money."

I didn't buy everything on sale and put it in the closet; not because I didn't have money, but because I didn't want to be wasteful.
İndirimdeki her şeyi alıp dolaba koymadım; param olmadığından değil, müsrif olmak istemediğimden.
I calculated last month's expenditures; not because I was suspicious, but because I wanted to see our expenses.
Geçen ayki harcamaları hesapladım; şüphelendiğimden değil, giderlerimizi görmek istediğimden.
