Expressing Exclusivity
When describing something that is unique, characteristic, or exclusive to a particular person, place, or thing, Turkish uses three main words: özgü, has, and mahsus.
To use these postpositions, you must attach the dative case suffix -(y)A to the noun or pronoun they refer to.

Regional Flavors with "Özgü" and "Has"
When discussing regional cuisine, özgü and has are frequently used to express that a flavor (lezzet) or palate (damak tadı) is uniquely characteristic of a specific locale (yöre).
| This dish is exclusive to this region. | Bu yemek sadece bu yöreye özgü. |
| Kebab is a flavor unique to that city. | Kebap, o şehre has bir lezzet. |
| There is a distinct palate characteristic of each region. | Her bölgeye özgü farklı bir damak tadı var. |
Exclusive Traits with "Mahsus"
While özgü and has generally describe natural characteristics or cultural uniqueness, mahsus strongly emphasizes exclusivity. It is often used to declare that a feature (özellik) is reserved solely for a specific person, group, or entity.
| This feature is not exclusive to you alone. | Bu özellik sadece sana mahsus değil. |
| This registration and patent are exclusive to our company. | Bu tescil ve patent sadece bizim şirkete mahsus. |
Protecting Geographical Indications
In the culinary world, authentic local products are often legally protected by official registrations (tescil) or geographical indications (coğrafi işaret). You can combine these vocabulary words with your new grammar structures to discuss how regions protect their native aromas and ingredients.
