Exclusive Actions: -maktan / -mekten başka
To express that you are doing "nothing but" a specific action, or have "no choice other than" doing it, Turkish pairs the infinitive verb with the ablative case and the postposition başka (other/else).
Take the infinitive verb (-mak or -mek), add the ablative suffix (which always hardens to -tan or -ten after the unvoiced k), and follow it with başka:
Verb Stem + -maktan / -mekten + başka
This literally means "other than [verb]ing." It is frequently paired with negative statements, such as doing nothing else or serving no other purpose.
| I have been doing nothing but feeling burnout since morning. | Sabahtan beri tükenmişlik hissetmekten başka hiçbir şey yapmıyorum. |
| This project served no purpose other than overwhelming me. | Bu proje beni bunaltmaktan başka bir işe yaramadı. |
You can also use this structure to ask what else someone is doing when they seem stuck in an unproductive rut.

Expressing a Lack of Options
This pattern is perfect for expressing that you are trapped in a situation with no alternatives. It translates smoothly to having "no choice but to" or "no option left but to" perform an action.
| I had no choice but to explode from boredom. | Sıkıntıdan patlamaktan başka hiçbir çarem yoktu. |
When facing a creative block, you might find yourself forced to start over from scratch or trapped in a repetitive loop.
| I have no option left but to rewrite the article from scratch. | Makaleyi sil baştan yazmaktan başka seçeneğim kalmadı. |

Whether describing a singular fear or a bad habit, this structure emphasizes that out of all possible actions, only this one is happening.
