Emphasizing "Even Though": Her ne kadar
To express "even though," place her ne kadar at the start of a clause, attach the conditional suffix -sa / -se to the verb, and follow it with the separate particle da / de.
When describing states or adjectives, you will frequently use the verb olmak (to be) as olsa da (even though it is). This structure is perfect for admitting a rental apartment has flaws while highlighting why it is still a great choice.
| Even though its location is central, the house is very old. | Her ne kadar konumu merkezî olsa da ev çok eski. |
| Even though the rent is expensive, I want to live in this central location. | Her ne kadar kirası pahalı olsa da bu merkezî konumda yaşamak istiyorum. |
Existence and Action Verbs
This pattern applies perfectly to statements of existence using var (there is) and yok (there is not), which become varsa da and yoksa da.
| Even though there is dampness in the bathroom, the living room is very beautiful. | Her ne kadar banyoda rutubet varsa da salon çok güzel. |
| Even though I do not have a deposit now, I am renting this house. | Her ne kadar şimdi depozitom yoksa da bu evi kiralıyorum. |
For action verbs, the conditional suffix attaches either directly to the verb root or to the tense suffix. Notice how da / de always follows vowel harmony rules based on the preceding syllable.
| Even though the apartment needs renovation, it is sufficient and spacious for us. | Her ne kadar daire tadilat istese de bizim için yeterli ve ferah. |
| Even though the combi boiler is not working well right now, the insulation is perfect. | Her ne kadar kombi iyi çalışmıyorsa da yalıtım mükemmel. |
Attaching Directly to Adjectives
Instead of using olsa da, you can attach the conditional suffix directly to adjectives or nouns. Add -sa / -se to words ending in a consonant, and -ysa / -yse to words ending in a vowel.
| Even though the house is small, it is in a central location. | Her ne kadar ev küçükse de merkezî bir konumda. |
