Clauses of necessity (icap eden)

The "icap eden" Relative Clause

When dealing with bureaucratic or formal matters, you often need to refer to actions you "must" take or documents you "are required to" handle. To build this type of formal relative clause, Turkish pairs a verbal noun with the phrase icap eden (which is necessitated / which is required).

To form this structure:

  • Start with the verb stem and add the verbal noun suffix (-mA).
  • Add a possessive suffix to show who is required to perform the action (-m for me, -nız for you, etc.).
  • Follow with the phrase icap eden.
  • Place the target noun being described at the very end.
The power of attorney that you are required to get approved is at the notary.
Onaylatmanız icap eden vekâletname noterde.
The criminal record that I am required to present is clean.
İbraz etmem icap eden sabıka kaydı temiz.

Official Authorities and Paperwork

This phrasing is essential when discussing mandatory documentation or dealing with an official makam (authority). Notice how the entire clause acts as a giant adjective modifying the noun.

The copy of the certificate of residence that we are required to bring is in the folder.
Getirmemiz icap eden ikametgâh sureti dosyada.
The official authority that we are required to inform is very busy today.
Bilgilendirmemiz icap eden resmî makam bugün çok meşgul.

Third-Person and Plural Requirements

The possessive suffix attached to the verbal noun changes depending on whose obligation it is. For "he/she/it", use -sı or -si. For "they", use -ları or -leri.

Where is the register file that he is required to check?
Kontrol etmesi icap eden sicil dosyası nerede?
The notification that they are required to send is at the post office.
Göndermeleri icap eden tebliğ postanede.

Adding Case Endings

Because the target noun sits at the very end of the structure, it will take any case endings required by its role in the broader sentence. For example, if the required document is the specific direct object of the main verb, it must take the accusative case suffix.

I read the official notification that I am required to sign.
İmzalamam icap eden tebliği okudum.
They did not accept the copy of the certificate of residence that you were required to hand in.
Teslim etmeniz icap eden ikametgâh suretini kabul etmediler.
