พวก เขา มี รถยนต์ กี่ คัน ครับ

From Lesson 21:How many (กี่)·Thai

Questions & Answers about พวก เขา มี รถยนต์ กี่ คัน ครับ

Why is the word order รถยนต์ กี่ คัน instead of กี่ รถยนต์?
In Thai, when you ask "how many" of something, the pattern is always: Noun + กี่ (how many) + Classifier. So instead of "how many cars", the structure is literally "car + how many + vehicle-unit".
What does the word คัน do in this sentence?
คัน is the classifier (a counting word) used specifically for vehicles like cars, bicycles, and motorcycles. Whenever you count vehicles or ask กี่ (how many) of them there are, you must put คัน right after กี่.
Does พวกเขา mean "they"? I thought เขา alone meant "they".
เขา usually means "he" or "she", but it can sometimes mean "they" depending on the context. Adding พวก (which means a group) in front of it creates พวกเขา. This strictly means "they" or "them", making it perfectly clear you are talking about multiple people.
I've seen รถ used for car before. Why does this sentence use รถยนต์?
รถ is a general word for almost any wheeled vehicle, though people often use it as a shortcut for "car" in daily conversation. รถยนต์ specifically means "automobile" or "car", so it is just a bit more precise and slightly more formal.
