Learn Thai: จะ　คาดคะเน　อนาคต　ไป　ทำไม - What is the point of speculating about the future?

While ทำไม usually asks for a direct reason, wrapping the action in จะ... ไปทำไม creates a rhetorical frame. It questions the utility or logic of the action itself. Instead of 'For what reason will you speculate?', it strongly implies 'What is the point of speculating?' or 'There is no good reason to speculate.'

I already know words like เดา (to guess). How is คาดคะเน different?

เดา is a casual, sometimes blind guess. คาดคะเน (to speculate, estimate, or project) sounds more analytical. It implies trying to make a reasoned assessment based on current information, making it a great fit when talking about projecting 'the future' (อนาคต) in a broader, more serious sense.

Why is ไป (to go) used before ทำไม in this sentence?

In this frame, ไป doesn't mean physical movement. It acts as a particle indicating that an action is carried out onward or pushed away from the speaker. Here, it emphasizes the ongoing or projected nature of speculating. In rhetorical questions, adding ไป often makes the phrase feel more dismissive, similar to asking 'Why bother carrying on with this?'

If I use this frame in conversation, will it sound rude or aggressive?

It can sound dismissive or exasperated if directed at someone's personal actions, as it essentially means 'You are wasting your time.' However, in a philosophical context like this sentence—wondering about the general future—it simply sounds like a thoughtful, rhetorical observation.
