สิ่งที่ พวก เขา กำลัง แสวงหา อยู่ คือ ความสุข ค่ะ

Questions & Answers about สิ่งที่ พวก เขา กำลัง แสวงหา อยู่ คือ ความสุข ค่ะ

How does สิ่งที่ work here, and why can't I just use อะไร for 'what'?
อะไร (arai) is a question word. In English, we use 'what' for both questions ('What is it?') and statements ('What I want is...'). In Thai, you use สิ่งที่ (sing thi), meaning 'the thing that,' for statements. It turns the phrase 'they are seeking' into a noun phrase acting as the subject of the sentence.
What is the difference between แสวงหา and just หา?
หา (ha) is the standard, everyday word for 'to look for' or 'to find,' usually for physical objects like your keys. แสวงหา (sawaeng ha) is a more formal and elevated word used specifically for seeking out abstract, deeper concepts like truth, peace, or in this sentence, ความสุข (happiness).
Why are both กำลัง and อยู่ used around the verb?
Both of these words indicate an ongoing action, similar to the '-ing' ending in English. กำลัง (kamlang) goes before the verb, and อยู่ (yu) goes at the end of the action. You do not strictly need both, but framing the verb as กำลัง...อยู่ is a very natural way to emphasize that the search is an active, ongoing process right now.
Why is the word for 'is' คือ here, rather than เป็น?
คือ (khue) is used when stating that two things are exactly identical or when giving a definition (A = B). Because the subject ('What they are seeking') is the exact same thing as the object ('happiness'), คือ is the correct choice. เป็น (pen) is instead used to categorize something, like saying what profession a person belongs to.
