The Definitional Copula คือ
In English, we use the word "is" in many different ways. In Thai, when you want to define a term, state an exact equivalent, or say "namely" or "that is," you use the definitional copula คือ.
Think of คือ as an equals sign (=). It tells the listener exactly what an abstract concept or thing (สิ่ง) is.

Meanings and Goals
Because คือ establishes a direct identity and definition, it is the natural choice when asking about or explaining the "meaning" (ความหมาย) or "goal" (เป้าหมาย) of something.
| What is the meaning of this? | ความหมาย ของ สิ่ง นี้ คือ อะไร คะ |
| The goal of the company is profit. | เป้าหมาย ของ บริษัท คือ กำไร ครับ |
Pros and Cons
When evaluating choices, you will frequently use คือ to clearly point out an "advantage" (ข้อดี) or "disadvantage" (ข้อเสีย) of a situation or object.
| The advantage is it's cheap, but the disadvantage is it's slow. | ข้อดี คือ ถูก แต่ ข้อเสีย คือ ช้า ค่ะ |
Causes and Secrets
Similarly, when getting to the bottom of how or why something happens, คือ links the situation directly to its underlying "cause" (สาเหตุ) or the "secret" (เคล็ดลับ) behind it.
| If you're sick, the cause is the weather. | ถ้า คุณ ป่วย สาเหตุ คือ อากาศ ครับ |
