State maintenance particle (ไว้)

Handling Leftovers

In this lesson, we will talk about food preservation, including handling leftovers, refrigerating, and canning. When we finish a meal, there is often food left over (เหลือ).

The State Maintenance Particle (ไว้)

When you perform an action to keep something in a certain state or to save it for future benefit, use the word ไว้ after the action verb (or after the verb and its object). It translates roughly to "to keep" or "for later."

For example, if you are storing food in the refrigerator (ตู้เย็น), you add ไว้ to show that you are preserving it for future use.

Refrigerating and Freezing

To put food in the fridge, chill, or soak something, use the verb แช่. You will frequently pair this with ไว้ to indicate leaving something in the fridge for a period of time.

To talk about freezing, we describe the process of making the food hard or solid (แข็ง).

Cans, Lids, and Preparing for the Future

When storing food, you might use cans (กระป๋อง) and ensure the lid (ฝา) is closed tightly.

To express doing something "just in case" or providing "extra" for the future, use the word เผื่อ. When you buy or make things to keep on hand just in case, you can combine these concepts into เผื่อไว้.

Finally, keeping things preserved well means you can store them for a long time (นาน).
