Doing Two Things at Once
In Thai, when you want to say you are doing two actions at the same time—like "eating and talking" or "walking and texting"—you use the repeated particle ไป after each verb.
| simultaneous action particle | ไป |
The basic structure is: Verb 1 + ไป + Verb 2 + ไป.
| I eat and talk at the same time. | ผม กิน ไป คุย ไป ครับ |
| She walks and texts at the same time. | เขา เดิน ไป แชท ไป ค่ะ |
Adding Objects to the Actions
If the verbs in your sentence have objects (like driving a car or chewing gum), place the object directly after its verb, right before the ไป particle.
The structure becomes: Verb 1 + Object 1 + ไป + Verb 2 + Object 2 + ไป.
| He drives the car and chews chewing gum at the same time. | เขา ขับ รถยนต์ ไป เคี้ยว หมากฝรั่ง ไป ครับ |
| She paints her nails and talks on the phone at the same time. | เขา ทา เล็บ ไป คุย โทรศัพท์ ไป ค่ะ |
The Consequences of Multitasking
Doing two things at once often has a clear result. You might get swept up and do them enjoyably (เพลิน), accidentally do something unintended (เผลอ), or lose your concentration (เสียสมาธิ).
When describing the outcome of your simultaneous actions, place these result words and phrases at the end of the sentence.
| We text and watch a TV series at the same time enjoyably. | เรา แชท ไป ดู ซีรีส์ ไป เพลิน เลย ค่ะ |
| I watch a TV series and eat at the same time, until I accidentally fall asleep. | ฉัน ดู ซีรีส์ ไป กิน ไป จน เผลอ หลับ ค่ะ |
| If you work and listen to music at the same time, you will lose concentration. | ถ้า คุณ ทำงาน ไป ฟัง เพลง ไป จะ เสีย สมาธิ ครับ |
