Resultative causative (ให้)

The Resultative Causative (ให้)

In Thai, when you perform an action to achieve a specific result or state, you use the word ให้ to connect the action to its outcome. This translates roughly to doing something "until" a state is achieved, or doing an action "to make it" reach that state.

Action Verb + ให้ + Stative Verb

Before exploring the full pattern, let's look at a common cleaning action, ขัด (to scrub or polish), and a basic tool like a ฟองน้ำ (sponge).

Polishing and Smoothing

To express that you are polishing something until it is shiny, combine the action verb with ให้ and the desired state, such as เงา (shiny or glossy) or เรียบ (smooth or flat).

When objects have damage like a รอย (mark or scratch), you can use this construction to talk about smoothing them out.

Removing Stains and Dirt

Clothes and floors often gather a รอยเปื้อน (stain or smear).

To tackle dirty surfaces, you might use a น้ำยา (liquid cleaner or solution) to wash or scrub the item until it is completely clean (ให้สะอาด).

Flawless Results

For lighter cleaning, you might simply ปัด (dust or brush away).

When you want the final result to be absolutely perfect, you can use states like เนี้ยบ (neat, flawless, or immaculate) and ละเอียด (thorough or detailed). Connecting these with ให้ shows that you are performing a task meticulously to reach a pristine condition.
