When you want to specify exactly where or how things differ, or highlight a specific characteristic, you can use the complementizer ตรงที่. While it literally translates to "at the place that", it functions like the English phrases "in that", "exactly where", or "specifically because".
It links a general evaluation or comparison to the exact feature that justifies it.

Introducing Clauses with ตรงที่ว่า
You will frequently hear ว่า added to form ตรงที่ว่า. This functions the exact same way but is typically used to introduce a complete explanatory clause. In everyday spoken Thai, ตรงที่ and ตรงที่ว่า are often used interchangeably.

"Lies In That..."
When pointing out a specific problem, highlight, or standout feature, Thai often uses the verb อยู่ (to be/stay) combined with this complementizer.
The pattern is: [Subject/Topic] + อยู่ + ตรงที่ / ตรงที่ว่า + [Feature]
This translates smoothly to "lies in that..." or "is precisely because...".
