When evaluating a rather mediocre game of โบว์ลิ่ง (bowling), you might need to admit your skills are lacking, but still want to defend yourself from total embarrassment. To state that a situation is bad or intense without reaching the absolute extreme, Thai uses the phrase ไม่ถึงกับ.
Mitigating the Damage with ไม่ถึงกับ
The phrase ไม่ถึงกับ means "not to the extent of" or "not going so far as to." It acts as a boundary for a negative statement. You will frequently see it paired with the conjunction แต่ (but) to acknowledge a flaw while capping how bad the reality actually is.
For example, you might admit your game is bad, but not completely ห่วย (crappy), or that your ball falls into the ราง (gutter) without costing you the entire game.

When discussing the specifics of your game, you can use ไม่ถึงกับ to temper expectations. You can talk about how you เล็ง (aim) at the พิน (pins), or clarify that getting a สไตรก์ (strike) or a สแปร์ (spare) might just be a ฟลุก (fluke) rather than pure skill.
