Mistaken beliefs (นึกว่า)

To express a mistaken belief—when you assumed something was true, but it actually wasn't—use the verb นึกว่า ("thought that"). Place it directly before the clause that describes your incorrect assumption.

First Impressions

You will often pair นึกว่า with phrases that frame these false assumptions as initial, superficial impressions, such as แวบแรก ("at first glance") or ภายนอก ("on the outside").

Deceptive Personalities

This structure is highly useful for discussing someone's true character versus how they appear to others. You might mistakenly assume someone is ไร้เดียงสา (innocent) or well-intentioned, only to find out later that they are actually เจ้าเล่ห์ (cunning) or เจ้าชู้ (flirtatious).

Illusions and Pretending

To explicitly contrast a false appearance with reality, you can follow the นึกว่า assumption with the actual truth. You can use verbs like เสแสร้ง (to pretend) to describe someone putting on an act, or ภาพลวงตา (optical illusion) when your eyes deceive you from looking at something เผินๆ (superficially).
