Letting Things Be with ปล่อยให้
To express giving permission, allowing something to happen naturally, or leaving something alone, Thai uses the compound verb
| to let / to leave be | ปล่อยให้ |
You construct this by placing ปล่อยให้ directly before a secondary subject and its action. The structure is ปล่อยให้ + [subject] + [verb clause], which is equivalent to the English "let [someone/something] do [something]" or "leave [something] to do [something]."
| Let nature do its work.
Allowing the Process of Fermentation
This causative structure is especially useful when talking about passive culinary processes. When resting dough or fermenting ingredients, we must step back and allow active agents like yeast (ยีสต์) or microorganisms (จุลินทรีย์) to work on their own to create bubbles (ฟอง) or acid (กรด).
| Let the yeast work at room temperature. |
| If you let the microorganisms grow, acid will form. |
Pickling and Curing in Jars
When preparing preserved foods like vinegar (น้ำส้มสายชู), kimchi (กิมจิ), or yogurt (โยเกิร์ต) in a jar (โหล), we often perform an initial action—like pouring or mixing—and follow it with a ปล่อยให้ clause. This sequence describes setting up the ingredients and then leaving them alone to pickle (ดอง) or ferment (หมัก).
| Pour vinegar into the jar and let it pickle. |
| To pickle kimchi, you must leave it in the jar for a long time.
| Let the milk ferment into yogurt, and it will be delicious, living up to the wait. |
