The Formal Relative Pronoun อัน
In everyday Thai, you use ที่ to link a noun to a descriptive clause (meaning "which" or "that"). However, in highly formal, literary, or professional registers, you will encounter the relative pronoun อัน.
อัน functions exactly like ที่ but is reserved specifically for modifying abstract, elevated, or ethical concepts.
| I believe in a virtuous and pure love. (male speaker) | ข้าพเจ้า เชื่อ ใน ความรัก อัน ดีงาม และ บริสุทธิ์ ครับ |
Virtues and Ethics
Because of its formal tone, อัน is frequently paired with profound concepts like morality (คุณธรรม) and ideologies (อุดมการณ์). It is used to link these nouns to adjectives that describe noble (ประเสริฐ) or elevated (สูงส่ง) qualities.
| An individual should possess noble virtue. (female speaker) | บุคคล พึง มี คุณธรรม อัน ประเสริฐ ค่ะ |
| The leader adheres to an elevated ideology. (male speaker) | ผู้นำ ยึดมั่น ใน อุดมการณ์ อัน สูงส่ง ครับ |
Principles and Intentions
You will commonly see this structure in political, legal, and professional discourse. It establishes a refined and educated tone when discussing the core principles (หลักการ) of a society or evaluating someone's fundamental intent (เจตนารมณ์).
| We must protect the virtuous principles of society. (female speaker) | เรา ต้อง ปกป้อง หลักการ อัน ดีงาม ของ สังคม ค่ะ |
| As long as you just have a noble intent, it is enough. (male speaker) | ขอเพียงแค่ คุณ มี เจตนารมณ์ อัน ประเสริฐ ก็ เพียงพอ ครับ |
Describing Grand Concepts
Because อัน naturally elevates the noun it modifies, it is the perfect choice for discussing grand ideals like freedom (เสรีภาพ). Just like standard relative pronouns, it can introduce either a single adjective or an entire descriptive clause.
| The more the public adheres to an elevated freedom, the more society progresses. (male speaker) | ยิ่ง ประชาชน ยึดมั่น ใน เสรีภาพ อัน สูงส่ง สังคม ก็ ยิ่ง ก้าวหน้า ครับ |
| This is a principle which complies with the law. (female speaker) | นี่ คือ หลักการ อัน สอดคล้อง กับ กฎหมาย ค่ะ |
