Baking homemade ซาวโดว์ (sourdough) is a labor of love. Sometimes your results are not absolute perfection, but they are still quite good. To evaluate an outcome as "fairly" or "reasonably" successful, Thai uses the word พอสมควร.
Evaluating Degree with พอสมควร
The word พอสมควร acts as a moderate degree modifier. Placed immediately after an adjective or an adverb, it translates to "fairly," "reasonably," or "to a fair extent." It is the perfect phrase for when a quality is notable but not at the extreme end of the scale.
| Making sourdough bread takes a fair amount of time. | ทำ ขนมปัง ซาวโดว์ ใช้ เวลา นาน พอสมควร ครับ |
| This brand of wheat flour is fairly expensive. | แป้งสาลี ยี่ห้อ นี้ ราคา แพง พอสมควร ค่ะ |
Assessing the Process
As you mix your แป้งสาลี (wheat flour) and shape the dough into a ก้อน (loaf), you will need to observe how it behaves. You can use พอสมควร to describe how well the dough is proofing or how the texture is developing, such as when it starts to พอง (puff up) or when assessing the resulting เปลือก (crust).
| This loaf of dough is puffing up fairly well. | แป้ง ก้อน นี้ พอง ขึ้น ดี พอสมควร ครับ |
| The sourdough crust is reasonably crispy. | เปลือก ซาวโดว์ กรอบ พอสมควร ค่ะ |
The Final Results
When the baking is done, it is time to judge the crumb and texture. Sourdough bakers look for an open structure with a beautiful โพรง (air pocket) and a crumb that is nicely หนึบ (chewy). If everything comes together, you can proudly announce that your bread looks น่ากิน (appetizing).
| The bread has fairly beautiful pockets. | ขนมปัง มี โพรง สวย พอสมควร ค่ะ |
| This loaf of bread is chewy and fairly appetizing. | ขนมปัง ก้อน นี้ หนึบ และ น่ากิน พอสมควร ค่ะ |
