To express the goal, motivation, or purpose behind an action, use the word เพื่อ. Depending on what follows it, this translates to either "for" or "in order to".

It functions very similarly to English: you can place it directly before a noun to mean "for the sake of [noun]", or before a verb phrase to mean "in order to [verb]".

When discussing career ambitions or self-improvement, you will frequently pair เพื่อ with verbs that express effort and determination. Key verbs for these situations include ตั้งใจ (to intend or focus) and พยายาม (to try or make an effort).

This structure is essential when discussing long-term life plans, such as building a stable (มั่นคง) life, achieving success (ความสำเร็จ), or looking ahead to the future.
