Traditional Thai desserts are famous for their intricate shapes and fragrant ingredients. When talking about your favorites or sharing recipes, you will often need to rattle off a list of examples.

Ending Lists with เป็นต้น
In English, we often end an incomplete list of examples with "etc." or "and so forth." In Thai, you cap off a list with the marker เป็นต้น.
When giving examples, this marker pairs perfectly with introductory phrases like อย่างเช่น (such as). You place อย่างเช่น before the first item in your list, and เป็นต้น after the very last item.

Shortening to เช่น
For a slightly shorter and more conversational variation, you can drop the first word and just use เช่น (like / such as) to introduce your list.

Listing Contents with มี
When you want to say that a menu or a recipe includes certain things among others, you can introduce the list with the verb มี (to have / there is) and close it with เป็นต้น.
| Ingredients of Thai desserts include pandan leaves, jasmine, and sesame, etc. | ส่วนผสม ของ ขนม ไทย มี ใบเตย มะลิ และ งา เป็นต้น ครับ |
| At this shop, there are Khanom Chan, Khanom Khrok, coconut custard, etc. | ที่ ร้าน นี้ มี ขนมชั้น ขนมครก สังขยา เป็นต้น ครับ |
Complete Lists
Remember that เป็นต้น is strictly for lists where you are giving examples and leaving other things out. If you are listing exactly what you plan to buy or exactly what you put into a dish, simply link the items with และ (and) and leave เป็นต้น out entirely.
