Connecting Contrasting Ideas
To connect two opposing ideas or contrasting descriptions, use the conjunction แต่ (but). You can use it to compare two different subjects by placing it directly between the two clauses. Let's look at contrasting personality traits, such as being hardworking (ขยัน) or lazy (ขี้เกียจ).
| He is hardworking, but I am lazy. |
You can also use แต่ to contrast physical differences between people or animals, such as comparing who is tall and who is short (เตี้ย), or who is chubby (อ้วน) and who is thin (ผอม).
| My older brother is tall, but my younger sister is short. |
| This dog is fat, but that cat is thin. |
Contrasting Qualities in One Subject
Often, a single person or animal will have two qualities that seem to contrast, such as being strict (ดุ) but also kind (ใจดี), or cute (น่ารัก) but aggressive. You can use แต่ to link these adjectives without needing to repeat the subject.
| The teacher is strict, but kind. |
| This cat is cute, but very aggressive. |
Contrasting Traits with Actions
แต่ can link more than just simple adjectives. You can use it to contrast a personality trait, like being smart (ฉลาด) or funny (ตลก), with a contrasting action or behavior.
| You are smart, but you do not like reading books. |
| My friend is funny, but he works very slowly. |
