Counting Groups of People
In Thai, counting generally follows the structure: Noun + Number + Classifier. When counting distinct groups of people (or objects), use the classifier กลุ่ม.
When talking about groups of people, you will often use verbs related to assembling. รวมตัว is a general term for gathering together, while ชุมนุม can refer to gathering or assembling for a specific cause, such as a rally.
The opposite action is to disperse or scatter, expressed with the verb แยกย้าย.
Flocks, Herds, and Prides
English uses many specific words for groups of animals, such as a pride of lions, a pod of dolphins, or a troop of monkeys. In Thai, this is much simpler: use the classifier ฝูง for any group, herd, or flock of animals.
Specifying Which Group
Remember that Thai classifiers aren't just used with numbers; they are also required when using demonstratives like "this" or "that." To point out a specific group or herd, use the structure Noun + Classifier + Demonstrative.
You can easily combine these concepts in a single sentence to describe complex scenes, such as different groups of people observing flocks of wildlife.
