Shifting Topics with ว่าแต่ and ว่าแต่ว่า
In natural conversation, you often need to suddenly change the subject, bring up a new thought, or pivot from small talk to the main topic. To say "By the way...", start your sentence with ว่าแต่ or its slightly longer, slightly softer variant ว่าแต่ว่า.
These discourse markers are always placed at the very beginning of the sentence. They are excellent for catching up on recent news, such as asking what someone has been doing lately (หมู่นี้) or if someone is about to retire (เกษียณ).
| By the way, what are you doing lately? |
| By the way, do you know whether the manager will retire? |
Pivoting to Business Matters
When networking or meeting colleagues, you will typically start with light conversation (สนทนา) before steering the discussion toward work. You can use ว่าแต่ to smoothly transition into asking about project progress (ความคืบหน้า) or proposing to collaborate (ร่วมงาน).
It is also the perfect transition for handing over your business card (นามบัตร).
| By the way, is there any progress on the new project? |
| By the way, I would like to collaborate with you. Here is my business card. |
ว่าแต่ว่า works exactly the same way in these professional contexts. Both forms are highly useful for wrapping up a conversation by confirming a communication channel (ช่องทาง) or managing an appointment (นัดหมาย).
| By the way, what is the best channel to contact the team? |
| By the way, can we cancel the appointment? |
