As far as / as much as (เท่าที่)

Setting Boundaries with เท่าที่

When you need to state the limits of your knowledge, memory, or physical capacity, use the connector เท่าที่ ("as far as" or "as much as"). It sets a clear boundary or scope on the information or action that follows.

"As Far As..." (Knowledge and Memory)

To frame a statement with the limits of your perception, place เท่าที่ before a subordinate clause—often at the very beginning of the sentence. This creates phrases like "as far as I know" or "as far as I remember."

"As Much As..." (Capability and Effort)

When placed after a main clause, เท่าที่ defines the maximum extent to which an action can be performed based on available resources or ability.

To express that you are doing something "to the extent that you are reasonably able," you can pair เท่าที่ with the helper verb พอจะ.

to be reasonably able to
พอจะ

Estimating and Calculating

เท่าที่ is also extremely useful when drawing conclusions from counts, expected visual outcomes, or calculations. It shows that your conclusion is true only within the limits of the data you have processed.
