Questions & Answers about Hon blir trött av umgänget.
The noun umgänget looks related to the verb umgås (to socialize). How does it work?
Umgänget is the definite form of the neuter noun ett umgänge, which means "socializing," "company," or "interaction." It is the noun counterpart to the verb umgås (to spend time with / socialize).
Why does the sentence use av here instead of från for "from" socializing?
In Swedish, av is used to indicate the cause of a physical or emotional reaction. Because the socializing is the direct cause of her tiredness, av is required. The preposition från is generally reserved for physical movement away from a place or a point of origin.
Would the meaning change if I said she is trött på the socializing?
Yes, significantly! Trött av means you are physically or mentally fatigued by an activity. If you say Hon är trött på umgänget, it means she is annoyed by or "sick of" the company, rather than just sleepy or drained.
Why does the Swedish sentence use blir (becomes) instead of får (gets) here?
While English frequently uses "gets" to describe a change in state (gets tired, gets angry), Swedish uses blir (becomes) when pairing the verb with an adjective. You only use får when you are actually receiving, obtaining, or catching something (like a present, permission, or a cold).
